tanka

tanka--
small songs I sing
to join
my voice to other voices
hidden in the grass

almost spring

a cow’s skull
of polished bone—
through the orbit
of the eye
this patch of snowdrops

the slow chant
of chorus frogs
chilled
near to freezing
my hands fill with starlight

  1. These feel like a "sequence" or "tanka pair" to me. The eery feel of the nature imagery in the first part and then the hope and joy in line 5. I also like the link between the two of "orbit" and "starlight."

  2. Thanks, Janet! I didn't write them as a pair, but, as often happens, they seemed to want to be together.
